Hitting Your Funny Bone: Nothing Funny About That

Funny Bone - I Fail to See the Humor

Funny bone is a term for a sensitive area of the body, the ulnar nerve, which runs along the inner side of the elbow. Contrary to its name, there is nothing funny about it. In this article, we will explore why hitting your funny bone can be quite unpleasant and what you can do to alleviate the discomfort. Of course, the best remedy is, be careful and try not to hit your funny bone, because it hurts. But if you do it by accident, all you can really do is just shake it off!

Hitting Your Funny Bone: Nothing Funny About That

What Causes the Unpleasant Sensation?

When you hit your funny bone, you experience a sharp and unexpected jolt of pain. But what exactly causes this unpleasant sensation? Contrary to popular belief, the funny bone is not a bone at all. It is actually a nerve, the ulnar nerve, which is only protected by a thin layer of skin and a small amount of soft tissue. This makes it vulnerable to accidental bumps and hits.

The Anatomy of the Ulnar Nerve

To understand why hitting your funny bone hurts, let's take a closer look at the anatomy of the ulnar nerve. The ulnar nerve is one of the three major nerves in the arm and travels from the neck down to the hand. It passes through a bony tunnel in the elbow called the cubital tunnel.

Why Does It Feel So Funny?

Actually, there's a feeling, but I've never thought of it as funny. But, for the record, I'll answer the question.

When you hit your funny bone, you are actually hitting the ulnar nerve as it passes over the bony prominence on the inner side of your elbow. The sudden impact on the nerve stimulates the nerve fibers, causing a sensation of tingling, numbness, or pain. This sensation can sometimes radiate down the forearm and into the hand.

How to Relieve the Discomfort

I'm about to list five things you can do, but the truth is, all you can do is just shake if off or don't do it.

After hitting your funny bone, you may experience lingering discomfort or pain. Here are some tips to help alleviate the discomfort:

1. Shake It Off

Gently shake your arm to stimulate blood flow and help alleviate the tingling sensation. This can also help reduce any swelling that may have occurred.

2. Apply Ice

Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and numb the area, providing temporary relief from pain. Wrap the ice pack in a cloth to protect your skin and apply it for 10-15 minutes at a time.

3. Stretch and Massage

Perform gentle stretching exercises to relieve tension in the surrounding muscles. Massaging the affected area can also help promote blood circulation and reduce discomfort.

4. Pain Medication

Over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can provide temporary relief from pain and discomfort. Always follow the recommended dosage and consult with a healthcare professional if needed.

5. Prevention is Key

To prevent hitting your funny bone in the future, be mindful of your surroundings and avoid situations where accidental bumps may occur. Consider using protective padding or cushions if you frequently engage in activities that put you at a higher risk of hitting your funny bone.

Conclusion

Although hitting your funny bone may not be a laughing matter, understanding the anatomy and taking appropriate measures can help alleviate the discomfort and prevent future episodes. Remember, prevention is key, and if the pain persists or worsens, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Stay safe, be mindful, and take care of that funny bone.
