The Internet has Been Around Long Enough for People to Feel Nostalgic About It |
The first time you connected to the internet, the times were much simpler. There was no social media, no smartphones, no tablets and no constant flooding of information. The internet was mostly used for research and communication.
Dial-up connections were the normal way of connecting. It seemed like it took forever to load a single webpage, but because of the excitement back then, you probably thought it was lightening fast. If you're like most people, you were fascinated with the internet because it was something new.
You've Got Mail ! . . File's Done ! . . GoodBye!
Did you know that the voice heard over 35 million times a day, and the voice of America Online (AOL) was Elwood Edwards?
Mr Edward's wife, Karen worked in customer service for Quantum Computer Services before Quantum became AOL.
AOL thought it would be nice to add a human voice to their web browser, so she recommended her husband, who was a voice artist.
These famous quotes were recorded in 1989.
People were not worried about online privacy or cyberbullying. In fact, the word, cyberbully had not even been invented. People could freely express themselves without the fear of being judged or ridiculed.
Remember the old fashioned chat rooms? They allowed people to connect with like-minded people from all over the world, and remain anonymous. It was a time when the internet brought people together, rather than further dividing them.
With limited resources, people had to rely on credible sources and checking the facts before sharing any information. This made the internet a more reliable and trustworthy source of information. Today, with the rise of fake news, misinformation and clickbait, it has become very difficult to distinguish between what is true and what is not.
Every website, every online game, and every new feature felt like a new adventure waiting to be explored. Today, with the internet being such an important part of our lives, it has lost some of its novelty. We have become so dependent on it that we often take it for granted. We no longer get excited about using the internet. It has become part of our daily routine, such as, drinking a cup of coffee.
Personal websites, blogs, and online journals were popular. People could express themselves freely without the pressure of gaining a large following or likes.
Today, social media is dominating the internet, and it has influenced how we present ourselves online. People are now more concerned about their online image and the number of followers they have rather than sharing useful information and expressing their true selves.
Based on the changes in the internet since it's humble beginnings, it is very normal for people to feel nostalgic for what the internet used to be like. It represented a simpler time, where connections were genuine, and information was reliable.
However, we must also acknowledge that the internet has brought about significant progress and convenience. It has opened up a world of possibilities and has connected us in ways we could have never imagined. So, while it is okay to feel nostalgic for the past, we must also embrace the present and look forward to the future of the internet.
