Sweet Success: Mastering the Art of Making Homemade Syrup |
When you make your own, as opposed to buying, you have full control over the ingredients that go into your food.
Making your own food items, such as condiments, can also be much healthier because you decide what ingredients you use. And, you can say good-bye to processed foods.
Making my own bread, wine, brown sugar, and other items just makes more sense, especially since I always have the ingredients on hand in my kitchen.
About six years ago, I tried making syrup, and it turned out to be very delicious. However, there was a problem. About a week after storing the leftover syrup, it began to crystralize (turn hard and solid). I would have to heat it to use it again. I said to myself, That's no good!. And then, I just forgot about the idea, until recently.
One morning, I had a taste for homemade hot cakes, and realized I was out of syrup. This turned out to be a blessing in disquise. I remembered how to make it, and then I asked myself, Why don't I just make what I need to make these flapjacks taste good?. That was when I had one of the best brain storms ever. And I have been making homemake syrup ever since.
The key to making syrup is to make it as you need it. It's so easy to make. I've done it so many times that I can do it in my sleep. What I have left over, which is usually very little, I just store in a plastic, air tight container. And the way I use syrup, it doesn't have time to crystalize.
Now, I'm going to show you how to make delicious homemade maple syrup.
The first thing I recommend you get is a cast iron sauce pan. About a year ago, I purchased the exact sauce pan below, and it is the best money I've ever spent. If you don't have one, you can use any type of sauce pan. But this is the best for making homemade maple syrup. And it's not expensive. If you buy one used, from an antique store, you would pay twice as much.
This sauce pan is very small, and is perfect for making syrup as you need it. Also, it is cast iron, and will last forever.
Now, here's how to do it.
You can use brown sugar instead. If you do, you will not need to use molasses. Also, use McCormick Maple Extract. It' the best, and not expensive.
Add all of the ingredients to the sauce pan. Stir and make sure the butter is melted and the sugar has softened.
Bring it to a boil. When it starts to boil over, remove the sauce pan from the burner before the mixture reaches the top of the pan. This will stop it from boiling over.
Your syrup is done. Immediately, you will notice the syrupy texture after the foam goes away. This entire process takes about five minutes.
Now you are ready to pour this delicious syrup on those hot cakes, waffles, or French Toast.
Here's something you may want to try. Add a little of this syrup to a bowl of oatmeal. This is delightful.
I promise, you will never buy any syrup from the store that is as good as this syrup.
Also, use your imagination. You can make strawberry syrup. Just add a half a cup of strawberries, and leave out the molasses, maple extract and vanilla extract. You may want to keep the butter, but this is your call. As you cook this, the strawberries will become like a sauce. However, when it has cooled, you can puree it in a food processor. You can also make it with blueberries, blackberries, apples, or any fruit that you like. Like I said, use your imagination.
One final note! If you start making your own homemade maple syrup, you will love the way your kitchen will smell. Every time you go into your kitchen, you will smell the maple extract, because it is very strong.
I hope you try this recipe, and I hope you enjoy it.
