Colorize Black and White Photos

This article presents an actual photo that has been colorized by showing you the before and after. Which is better? YOU decide!

Which is Better? Original Black and White or Colorized?

Below is the before and after of a picture taken at my Grandparents' wedding, some time during the 1930s. As you can see, it is old and somewhat decayed. But this is part of its natural charm.

The one on the left is the original. It was posted on one of my websites, and a visitor took it on her own to save it, colorize it and email it to me. You can see the result on the right.

And by the way, I would like to thank the visitor who did this.

Which one do you like better?

The Charm of Black and White

There is no denying the timeless charm of black and white photography. They have a certain elegance and nostalgia attached to them. The absence of color allows us to focus on the composition, lighting, and emotions captured in the photograph. Black and white pictures have a classic and artistic feel, transporting us to a different era.

Colorizing for a New Perspective

On the other hand, colorizing black and white photos can offer a new perspective and revive the past in a different way. By adding color, we can connect with the subject matter on a deeper level, making the image feel more relatable. The addition of color reveals details that may have been lost in the original black and white version. It can spark a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world as it once was.

And, for the people who were actually there when the original photo was taken, it will bring back so many forgotten memories.

They are probably in their 90s, God Bless Them! This very special group of people know one very important thing:

Age is nothing but a number.

Conclusion

In the debate between whether it is better to keep black and white photos in their original form or colorize them, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. They both look good. But ultimately, the decision lies with the viewer and their personal preferences. Whichever one you like, they both have the power to take us back in time. They allow us to appreciate the beauty of the past and the art of photography in its many forms.
