Sure, Pete Rose made a mistake. But this had nothing to do with how great a player her was. I agree. Put him in Cooperstown.

The all time lifetime home run leader is Barry Bonds. The all time single season home run leaders are Barry Bonds (first) and Mark McGwire (second). Roger Clemens had 354 wins, 4,672 strikeouts, 7 Cy Young Awards, and 2 World Series championships. And finally, Pete Rose is the all time hit leader. None of these guys are in the Hall of Fame.
